Although the budget for student scholarships to attend overseas universities has seen dramatic reductions, Permanent Secretary of Finance Delton Jones has announced that about 20 new scholarships will be possible for the upcoming academic year.

There are currently 276 students on scholarships. According to Jones’ statement attached to the recently released budget, about 200 of these students should complete their studies by the end of 2010, with 100 due to complete by May.

The completion of studies of such a dramatic percentage of the students allowed for a reduction in the scholarship budget by $3 million compared to last year. However, Jones said “Even with this reduction, with enforcement of awards criteria and better monitoring of students performance, it will still be possible to allow currently on scholarships to complete their courses of study.”

In addition, Jones said about 20 new scholarships to high academic achievers could be awarded for the 2010-11 academic year.

Those currently on scholarships and those who may receive new ones will have to make due with less for living expenses. Savings of $300,000 are also reflected in the Budget from a proposed 10-percent reduction in overseas students’ subsistence, which Jones said should be introduced at the start of 2010-11 academic year.
