![]() Since announcing a 10-percent pay cut for civil servants at the March 9 meeting of the Consultative Forum, Chief Executive Officer Mark Capes’ spending has been put under the microscope. While he confirmed that he also got a 10-percent pay cut, rumours arose when he recently changed residences in Providenciales. Some questioning the burden his residence has on the people of the Turks and Caicos Islands. A government spokesperson denied recent rumours claiming extravagant rents being paid by the TCI government for Capes’ Provo apartment saying, “Contrary to unfounded allegations and misinformation, rent for the Chief Executive’s accommodation in the TCI is paid entirely by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.” The CEO was recently forced to move from one residence to another, the spokesperson said, which caused a stir with some locals questioning the timing. “The Chief Executive left his accommodation at The Somerset due to a change in circumstances, and not of his making.” In addition, the spokesperson denied figures which had been suggested to have been paid for the residence. “Various figures circulating in some parts of the media as to the cost of his new and former accommodation are grossly exaggerated (by more than 300 percent in one case), and HE The Governor does not rent or own a property in Providenciales or anywhere else in the TCI. It appears that these wild allegations are being generated by a few individuals who oppose the Interim Government’s efforts to restore the islands to good governance.”
