The Turks and Caicos Islands Community College started the 2009-2010 school year on September 7th, 2009 with a full house of students and they are running full steam ahead for the coming year. The school opened both Campuses with an enrolment of 250 students at the Grand Turk Campus and 180 at the Providenciales campus.
For the new school year, the college is offering new degree programs. In addition to the eleven Associate Degrees and nine Certificate programmes already offered, an Associate Degree in Environmental Science and Certificate in Social Work came on stream. The Degree in Environmental Science is offered at the Grand Turk Campus only, while the Certificate in Social Work is offered at both Campuses. The Social Work degree is a two year Certificate programme offered in collaboration with the Open Campus of the University of the West Indies in Trinidad. The programme seeks to meet the training needs of persons actively engaged in Social Work or a related field. It offers study at the para-professional/para academic level leading to the award of a Certificate. Successful completion of the programme carries normal matriculation status into the University of the West Indies along with certain exemption privileges. For students wishing to focus their attention and interest on important and pressing environmental issues, the Associate Degree in Environmental Science is a two year academic programme that concentrates on the fundamental principles of science which govern and describe the physical and biological character of the Earth and matters concerned with environmental degradation. Issues such as resource depletion, air and water pollution, waste management, global warming and species extinction are included in the programme. Additionally, the College is offering two new programmes to the Public Service in response to needs identified by the Office of the Public Sector Management. These include Customer Service and Business Writing Skills. Members of the public who are interested may also access these courses. The President Rev Julia Williams also pointed to the number of students who have enrolled in the Primary Teacher Education Programme and in the General Studies Science Programme as being a positive change in the school. The College offers an Associate Degree in Primary Teacher Education at the Grand Turk Campus, in collaboration with and accredited by the Joint Board of Teacher Education, Faculty of Humanities and Education of the University of the West Indies in Jamaica. According to Williams, the programme is the same as that offered at the Teachers Colleges in Jamaica and is assessed in the same manner as is done there. Faculty members of the University come to the Turks and Caicos to assess final year practicum, review test questions, students’ examination scripts and then make a final report. “Despite the challenges of finances, infrastructure, equipment and supplies we at the College are determined to move forward in providing quality education for our most valued resource – our people - to enable them to make a positive contribution to national development,” stated Presided Rev Williams. The Community College is vital to the education system in the Turks and Caicos. As budgets have been cut for overseas education, offering quality education on island is critical for the future of the country and its economy. Rev. Williams is working hard to provide the best education on island possible, focusing on fulfilling the needs of the local community at the same time.
