![]() Ten years after he served as chief minister of the Turks and Caicos Islands, Derek Taylor was again chosen to lead the People’s Democratic Movement in the next elections that are expected in late 2012. “I’m delighted that I can come back and serve my country in this way,” Taylor said after defeating former leader Doug Parnell in voting by a 2-1 margin during a Nov. 19 meeting of the party’s convention on Providenciales. Taylor, now 60, led the country from February 1995 until August 2003, when he and his party were defeated by members of the Progressive National Party, which retained control until the U.K. took control of the country in 2009 after allegations of government corruption. Parnell, who led the PDM for two years, defeated Samuel Harvey and Clarence Selver to become deputy leader. He said he was pleased to be second in command, having told party members that he would serve in any capacity the convention chose.
