Officials expect a banner year at the Grand Turk Cruise Center. Following not one but two hurricanes this past September, the Turks & Caicos Islands along with Miami-based Carnival Corporation & PLC, have been busy rebuilding the Grand Turk Cruise Center and preparing for this years tourist season. The cruise center was reopened October 8, 2008 and now officials expect a record 500,000 passengers to pass thru the Grand Turk Cruise Center this year, which would represent a 25% increase over 2008.
The Grand Turk Cruise Center can accommodate up to 6,000 passengers a day allowing guests the ease of embarking and debarking off the ships at their leisure. The site is 14 acres and sits on an 800-foot stretch of pristine beach. Cruisers can take a day to swim and snorkel in the turquoise hued waters, enjoy numerous water sports activities, rent a private beach cabana, enjoy a sea-side massage, and visit Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville, a restaurant and bar on the beach. Duty free shopping is also available everywhere at this 45,000 sq ft outdoor center. According to Carnival Cruise Lines, one of the key factors in Grand Turk's popularity is its range of excursion opportunities, which include horseback riding, kayaking, diving and fishing. For people who want to set off on their own exploration of the island, a car rental office recently opened at the cruise centre. The new on-site car rental agency provides GTCC guests with yet another option for experiencing and exploring the fascinating beauty of this island paradise.' Mike Reimers, general manager of the GTCC, said: 'The Grand Turk Cruise Centre is poised for a record-breaking year and we look forward to showcasing our island's magnificent beaches and diverse shore side experiences to cruise-ship visitors.
